Review for: Eglu Cube Chicken Coop with Run (3m) and Wheels - Green

Great Product but expensive and not built for the Australian climate
Finished building my Eglu Cube with 4m run a few days before Christmas, along with the Omlet Autodoor. My three chickens took to it immediately and no problems with the ladder and roosting. I only needed to keep them locked in the run for 2 days as they learnt quickly where to roost and where to lay the eggs. After spending a few weeks with the product, these are the Pros and Cons as I see them (bearing in mind I live in Northern Australia where it's very hot and very humid in the summer and fairly mild in the winter).
PROS:
*Plastic product, so reduces the risk of large mite infestations
*Easy to clean - takes all of 5 minutes
*Limited ongoing maintenance - wood rots very quickly in wet Australian summers, even if it's been coated
*Fairly easy to put together with the instruction manual and youtube video, just a little tedious
*Can move the coop fairly easily around the garden if necessary. A big positive for me as I can easily wheel into the garage if a cyclone is threatening
*Materials seem fairly sturdy, so should hold up well
*Fairly predator proof. Although foxes aren't really an issue in my area, they are a big issues in other parts of Australia and the skirting should help keep them out. Main predator in my area would be sizeable pythons.
*The Autodoor works a treat and takes a matter of minutes to install. I also got the coop light which comes in handy as it helps the chickens find their roosting spot and settle in for the night as well as checking on the girls at night if needed.
*Girls seem to be very happy with their new coop as they weren't really enjoying roosting in their old wooden coop, preferring to roost on the roof (although I couldn't see any evidence of mites).
CONS:
*Omlet being a UK company, the coop is probably built moreso for UK conditions rather than the summers we experience here in Australia. Omlet claim the coop stays cool in summer, but I imagine it's been tested in a British summer. I have found the coop to be too hot, so have removed the back panel and fitted my own mesh panel with flyscreen attached to allow for much more breeze to blow through and ventilate the coop. It should be enough to keep the snakes out, but if you lived in a fox prone area my quick and dirty mesh panel won't do the job. The chickens are still panting after this alteration, however it's better than it was. I will reinstall the back panel in the winter when temperatures are more comfortable.
*The plastic clips supplied to put the run together won't last a terribly long time in ongoing Australian summers. I suspect they will turn brittle and snap, so would recommend getting some mesh clips to install along with the plastic clips so if the clips snap when trying to move the coop, you won't have the whole run falling apart.
*Omlet claim up to 6 large chicken or 10 bantam chickens. This would be a bit of a stretch for Australian climate as chickens prefer a little more space between them during summer as it's too hot to cuddled up together. I wouldn't be having more than 4 medium to large chickens if you want them to remain somewhat comfortable on a hot summer night.
*Expensive. The coop isn't cheap and is somewhat overpriced despite it being a great product. With the Cube, 4m run and Autodoor it amounted to $2026.15 including a $300+ delivery fee. Is it worth paying all that money? Well, that would be up to the individual. For me, it's probably worth it in the time saved with ongoing maintenance, cleaning and replacement of wooden coops. I would say it's probably a couple of hundred dollars overpriced, though.
All in all I am happy with my purchase, however if you live in a climate with very hot summers, then you may need to make some alterations as despite making my own alterations, the chickens are still panting at night (which is basically unavoidable in Aussie summers regardless).

good quality
We bought this a few weeks ago. excellent quality. Wish we had ordered enough to cover all the run. Will get additional ones when they are back in stock. 4 metre ones would have been the icing on the cake though.

Great winter boredom buster
I hang this inside my coop in the winter so the girls peck at it and not each other. Here in northern Michigan winters are long and cold and it gives them a distraction

Sturdy, very simple small coop
I bought this in the Black Friday sale ready for when I need to introduce new hens next year. I already have an Eglu cube Mark to so I’m already a big fan of the ease of use an Omlet coop. The Go is very quick to put together and very and easy to move around. It still feels very sturdy however. It is small I wouldn’t use it for more than three hens. The only thing that made me hesitate over the purchase is that the Omlet automatic door can’t be used with it, The ease of cleaning and very weatherproof nature of these coops make me buy a second one despite this. Omeletwould you consider designing and having an automatic door for the go coops as well please?

NOT PREDATOR PROOF
Look on forums for reviews, my experience with the omlet is common. The coop itself is easy to clean - the run is NOT predator proof and WE LOST A CHICKEN. The openings are more than 1/4 in big, so a grounded HAWK managed to reach in and ATTACK AND KILL and PULL A CHICKEN towards it and EAT HER through the wide openings of the grate. We had to reinforce the entire run portion with hardware cloth, as the hawks returned for more.. AWFUL EXPERIENCE considering how much we spent on the set up with 9ft of run. Although a set up from tractor supply may have been harder to clean, one of my girls would still be with me AND I would have saved a few hundred dollars…our neighbors who are experienced chicken keepers also pointed out how weasels and fisher cats and foxes could easily penetrate the run. We are in the northeast where it gets pretty cold, so we put a wireless thermometer inside to make sure the coop is as insulated as omlet claims. It turns out it’s always the same temp inside as it is outside. DO NOT RECOMMEND. This has been a costly experience emotionally and financially- We are looking into alternatives now and encourage Eglu to add a bigger disclaimer about how their runs are absolutely not predator proof and if you have one already please reinforce with 1/4” hardware cloth for your birds
