Modern Game Chickens

Modern Game History

Modern Game chickens are a striking breed of bird. They evolved from breeding Malay and Old English Game . They were first breed in the late 1850's as a sleeker version of the gamecock which was used for fighting. However, Modern Game was bred for shows rather than for fighting as this was outlawed around this time. They reached their peak of popularity in the early 1900's – with large numbers entered for competition and breeding stock often selling for outrageous prices. Throughout the late part of the 1900's century they declined in popularity – however lately they have increased in popularity, especially the bantam variety.

Modern Game Behaviour

They are tall handsome birds that like to be active. They are quite curious birds and can be tamed and handled easily. They are tightly feathered and are quite small – often sitting comfortably in the palm of your hand. They are not good layers and being lightweight are not good for the table either.

Modern Game Varieties

Originally only 5 colour were recognised: Black-Red, Black-Brown, Brichens, Duckwings and Piles. However, there are now 13 colours recognised in the UK and 18 in America. These include: Black, Blue, Golden Duckwing, Lemon Blue, Silver Blue and White

- Delaney,

Modern Game Bantams are my favorite breed of chickens. In my opinion, they are very beautiful, and unique! Most seem to be friendly, BUT I’ve had an occasional rooster that wasn’t very friendly, or a hen who would peck at my fingers or hands when I reached in the pen. As I’ve experienced, they aren’t very hardy birds, depending on how they were raised and where. I have one bird that was raised by another hen who lived outside. (I’m in Illinois, not the best weather in the winter when she was hatching). He’s very hardy, and doesn’t get sick/cold easily. I then have other birds who won’t survice without a heat lamp when temps get under 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. They are also extremely hard to hatch!! I only got about 20 chicks this year out of 100+ eggs. Good luck if you try to incubate them! My MGBs lay about once every 1-3 days, more towards the1 and 2 days, depending of course on the amount of light they get. Overall, I love MGBs! They are amazing birds, and seem to have great personality’s!

Gorgeous Bird! - Smj,

The modern game bantam has almost gained status as my favourite bird over the few months that I have owned them. Many people argue that modern game and other game breeds are marmite birds - you either love them or hate them. Its easy to understand why, as long skinny legs may not be to everyone's taste, especially those used to the typical Orpington style breed. But I love them! I would highly recommend modern game for anyone looking to keep a unique and interesting breed. They are very sweet and friendly, don't take up much room and are adorable foragers as they're so tiny. I have also found them to be very good layers - on par with my wyandotte bantam. So go and buy yourself some! I promise you won't regret it.

Nosy good looking birds with surprisingly good eggs - Elspeth,

From their size you probably wouldn't expect much in the way of eggs but they lay equally as well as Peking Bantams and with eggs of a similar size. Their quirky personalities and friendliness make them charming additions to a enclosed garden, though be aware that these are great climbers and their nosy nature will take them into bushes and onto anything that may resemble a perch, if you wish to keep these as garden birds then make sure it is well enclosed. The modern game body shape means that flight is minimal, they can jump quite high and will glide back down to the ground in the same way most pekings do. They do not need their wings clipped as this is their number 1 defence mechanism against cats etc. For appearance I gave them 5 stars but really it's in the eye of the beholder, the colour varieties are delightful as are the long legs and beautiful shape of the body. If you're breeding them then appearance and shape is everything, on show birds they are remarkably stunning and very distinct. Handling wise as with all chickens you need to begin early, mine adore cheese and mealworm so regular hand feeding brings them on quickly. They will climb all over you to get something tasty and will relax when held correctly. These are English birds so do very well outdoors all year round, they love sunbathing and will peck around in the rain though they do need shelter and somewhere warm to roost. They adore slugs & snails and all the baddies you want rid of, and they definitely have a 6th sense for finding them!
